Melissa Paris is a trailblazer in the world of motorcycle racing, shifting gears from an AMA Motocross competitor to mentor with unwavering dedication.
From Racing BMX Bikes to AMA Motocross
Growing up in Northern California, she first chased her brothers on a BMX bike, but it wasn’t until college that her passion for motorcycles ignited.
At San Diego State University, a chance encounter with a fellow student and his sport bike led her to discover the exhilarating world of motorcycling.
Paris’s initial thrill on a motorcycle was like stepping into a vibrant new world. The brief college romance faded, but her love for bikes only grew stronger. She invested in her own motorcycle, often skipping classes to ride through California’s scenic roads.
Her talent soon caught the attention of seasoned riders, who encouraged her to take her skills to the racetrack. Once there, Paris was hooked, striking deals to repair bikes in exchange for track time.
Despite the financial demands of club racing, Paris was relentless. Balancing a full-time academic schedule with a job, she pursued weekend competitions on 125 and 250cc bikes.
Her commitment paid off when she became the Lightweight National Champion in 2008, propelling her into the professional AMA motocross ranks.
Beginning a Career In Professional Racing
Paris’s professional debut in 2009 at Daytona marked a historic moment as she became the first woman to qualify for and compete in a World Supersport Race. Her performances that year included a 21st place finish on a Yamaha R6 and a top wild card qualifying position.
Over the next few years, Paris competed in prestigious series such as the AMA Daytona Sportbike and British Supersport.
In 2011, she tested Yamaha’s MotoGP prototype bike, an opportunity that was both terrifying and thrilling, as she pushed the limits while overcoming doubts about her capabilities.
Her racing career saw continued success, including a landmark moment in 2014 when she finished fourth in the FIM CEV Repsol International Roadrace Championship.
Paris also made history by becoming part of the first all-female teams to qualify and complete both the Bol d’Or and LeMans 24 Hour World Endurance Championship Races in 2016 and 2017, respectively.
From AMA Motocross Racer to Team Owner
Recognizing the support she received throughout her career, Paris founded MP13 Racing to nurture the next generation of riders, particularly young women.
Her vision was to create a supportive environment where aspiring racers could thrive. Through initiatives like Royal Enfield’s Build. Train. Race. program, Paris has been instrumental in mentoring women without prior track experience, guiding them through building and racing their own bikes.
The former AMA motocross racers emphasizes the importance of mechanical confidence among female racers, encouraging them to overcome perceived barriers in the sport. Her approach is not only about teaching racing skills but also empowering women to handle the technical aspects of motorcycles.
A firm believer in inclusivity, Paris is committed to ensuring that both men and women feel welcome in the racing world. Her mission is to encourage others to pursue their dreams, emphasizing that hard work and determination are crucial to success.
Melissa Paris’ Work Ethic
The former AMA motocross racer’s own work ethic was shaped by her parents, who modeled dedication despite their own careers being less than ideal. Her mother drove a bread truck, and her father repaired boilers, instilling in her the value of hard work. For Paris, working hard in a field she loves is a given.
Her meticulous attention to detail is evident in her approach to preparing motorcycles for races. She strives for perfection and constantly seeks areas for improvement. Even with a completed bike, Paris focuses on what could be better, embodying a relentless drive for excellence.
